Planted seed in normal cat litter tray fashion back in March, but because of the weather etc. they never really grew to pencil thickness by June when I normally puddle them in.

Found them in the (unheated) greenhouse today and planted them out. Was it a waste of time, or will something come of this? Nothing ventured I suppose?

TBH I doubt if they will bulk up much now.

Baby leeks are however an expensive delicacy, so you can always think of them in that way

It is ever so late to be planting them out.... now the cold has set in they will be so slow to get going but

            as sunshineband says, if they make it, baby leeks are lovely.

I also have a few parenthetically small leeks. What happens in the spring? wont they start bulking up then?

They will keep alright but, as DD says, when the warmer spring weather comes they will belt back into growth, develop a tough central core as they begin to form their seed heads. Once that happens they are pretty inedible.

You don't have to waste them though, even if they are only tiddlers, lifted & washed during the winter months they can be addded to stews or stir-fired when you need them.
