Skinny leeks
« on: November 21, 2012, 10:32 »
Hi, my leeks, which I planted months ago, are still looking a bit on the skinny side. Is that my lot or are they likely to grow a bit more?

Yes, they will fatten a bit but not much. They could be affected by hard frost or snow and will go to seed in late Spring.

Dig them to eat as you want them. When they are gone, they are gone.

Last year, our leeks increased in girth considerably between October and March and that was despite a sever winter. We lifted the remainder in March and froze them.

Hopefully yours will develop a bit more.

My leeks are skinny too, but they have been water affected, unfortunately. They nearly all have flower stalks running through the middle.

If I leave them will the stalks get fatter or will some more layers of leaves grow? Or are they (as I suspect) goners?

Break the flower heads off - there will still be a flower stalk running down the middle of the leek which some people surgically remove before eating but I'm not that fussy (cheese sauce covers a multitude of sins!)

The leeks may get a little bigger, but so will the remains of the flower stalk, although not by as much as if you just left them to flower.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older
