Hen House and lot piccies at last!
« on: November 25, 2007, 14:30 »
Well chaps here are some piccies of the Hen house and new lot. As you may know I moved from another lot on the same patch but this one had sheds and chucks thrown in! They had been somewhat neglected and I now have some time off at last to sort em out.

First photo is of the hen house and run. The run is covered and bone dry inside. The Hen house is large and has about 6 in of poop from one end to the other. I'm gonna give a proper clean out over the next week or so.

A big plot and lots of wok to do. Loads of rubbish, glas etc etc. I let the chucks wander the bottom half at the moment as they keep the weeds down for me!

Thanks yeh it is big!

Here's a couple of pics of the run. It's bone dry and devoid of life. I've scooped up loads of rubbish in there.

Would you recommend taking off the hard cover and using mesh to give more light and rain etc or leave as is? It just seems so stale the way it is.

It is lovely and big isn't it?  And hanging feeders with covers and drinkers too by the look of it!  Thos big drinkers cost £30 odd each!

The run does look a bit dark, and chooks love a bit of sunshine.  Why don't you take some of the roof off and cover with mesh, but leave some nearest the chook house, to give them cover in the wet days?

I would agree with the comments about light.  Is the roost part separate from the run, because if it is, I would be inclined to replace one of the solid walls with mesh to let light in and air through.
As guilty as a puppy next to a pile of poo

What a great space you've got! I'm a relative newby so I don't have any advise, I've been avidly reading about your plot inheritance though seeing as you're oop t'road from me (I'm in Wakefield) and I'm very jealous!

Good news to the chickens I bet too, sounds like they've had a rough time with the lazy sod who had the plot previously. About time they had a bit of TLC init

Best of luck, keep us posted on how you're getting on!  :D

Nice plot cudders ! huge hen house, like people have said it does look pretty dull in there, does the roof need a clean ? will that help. I personally would keep them covered. Mine always seem happier and healthier in the dry than in the wet.

Think I might just take a few of the blue borads out and replace with mesh as this is the south side and they will get some nice sun from there.

The roof is nice and surdy so does seem a bad idea to disurb it. Just need to make the run more interesting for the chucks.

Maybe some branches for them to climb on etc. Will also get a container full of sand for them to 'bath' in.

Hang up some greens for them to jump up and eat too, and if you get short of greens, hang up some CD's they can't eat them, but love jumping up anyway.  Only don't tie them up with string, my chicks used to bite through the string, then chase the cd's all over the floor!!!!

Ok will do. I'll take one tomorrow.

Not fancy like most of the others though. Just normal chucks I think.
