Garlic Cloves - Not Germinated
« on: November 13, 2012, 16:16 »
Afternoon All,

I planted about 15 garlic cloves about a month ago, and nothing has come up yet.

I dug one up to see if it had rotted, but it appeared to be fine, and looked a little plumper, than when it was sown, but no signs of growth.

Is this normal, I have never grown Garlic before.

Many thanks in advance.
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Patience! They'll pop up.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I had that happen one year, not a single shoot popped up all fall so I got some going inside to plant out in spring, only to find all the garlic had sprouted in very early spring.

So, definitely have patience.

My neighbour planted Sprint garlic and they have shoots around 3" tall already.  Mine have been dug out by animals twice and put back in the ground but I'm sure they'll be fine come spring  :D

There's no rush for them to show yet!

they need a good frost to get them sprouting.
mine were about 3" high last year when all the snow arrived, and carried on when it went to produce small but decent bulbs.

My Chinese garlic experiment is looking good. Every clove has sprouted about 2" high after 3 weeks.
Music went in later so not expecting anything for a while.

Should the skin be removed before planting the cloves? I have removed the skin but I’m now worried that I have messed things up.

Depends on variety as well, my Sprint is 3 or 4 inches up at the mo, Purple Wight planted at the same time are barely an inch up while my Messidrome and Solent Wight planted only a week later on 27th Oct are yet to make an appearance at all.
