Thunder and Lightening????
« on: October 19, 2012, 17:49 »
Almost 2 weeks ago now I introduced my new girl in with my other 2, having had her right next to them for 3 weeks before. It hasnt been an easy path, but we are there or there abouts with the pecking order now!

At the same time as moving her in, my Sussex stopped laying - she is usually an every day layer. I think she might be moulting (she was point of lay early August 2011), as there are white feathers all over the place and inside the house etc. So new lady has been laying every day, as has top hen, Milly. 2 nights ago we had a MASSIVE flash of lightening and the single loudest clap of thunder I have ever heard ............. yesterday and today only new hen has laid - could the fireworks have put off Milly?? Today there was new hen's egg, plus a membrane next to the innerds and perfect yolk of another egg - assuming its Milly's.

Am I missing anything? All well, eating well, wormed a month ago, oyster shell and grit, ACV etc etc etc ................ Do I put 1 down to moulting (how long does it take???) and the other down to the thunder and lightening????

The thunder an lightening can cause soft shelled eggs.  Any sort of shock can speed up the egg process and then the shell might not be fully formed.   ;)
