My hedge grows behind and to the north of a low wall. I push the clippings behind the wall around the base of the hedge to act as a mulch. Works well.

Wish we could do that, but we have a big land drain behind us that we can't contaminate.  approx 150 laylandeii that Brian promised to keep at a manageable height (they are now 40ft high!)  and a neighbour who complains to the council everytime we have a bonfire, so we have to keep taking the stuff over to the tip which is costing a fortune in petrol.
