Growing in succession lark
« on: July 29, 2012, 06:12 »
This year's dreadful weather meant that some veg went in at different times than normal, but it seems that this is the secret of succession planting!

I didn't contemplate taking bets on when each veg would get going, or die, or sulk, but we've found that the Broccoli seedlings bounded away on a second planting, and overtook the first planting made a few weeks before. The calabrese (not sure which variety - there are seventeen million variations aren't there), has begun to produce huge spears after looking miserable for ages!

The first Kohl Rabi just sat there doing nothing (still is), but the second sowing germinated in three days, which is a record in my book!

We did four sowings of peas, most died or struggled, but we got a few each time, so we have done two more direct sowings, and these started to germinate in 48 hours, which is another record!

Someone mentioned the possibility of an Indian Summer recently, and if this is the case, then I reckon its worth the risk!

What does the team think?

"what are you going to risk"

Probably that succession planting well into the season, with the risk of further bad weather, and/or an Indian Summer means either another failure, or a glut!

Well you know me Growster old chum - the eternal optimist  ::), so I say go for it. Its been such a difficult summer so far, its worth a pinch of seed here and there for the chance of a glut  ;)  :D

You can have cloches at the ready to nurse that last sown veg to harvest  :)

Absolutely News! Cloches at the ready...!

We haven't actually got any room to plant anything else at the moment!
