My garlic had rust so dug up today. Cut the tops off and have put into potting shed to dry. Should I remove the roots as well?

I always just put the whole thing to dry and tidy tops and roots and outside papery wrapping, when it is

Roots are shaken free of soil then they're the last thing removed before they go into storage.
