« on: July 04, 2012, 22:41 »
Anyone tried growing leeks through the stuff mentioned on this thread?

http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=96275.0

ie lay it down and push the dibber through it and drop the leeks in. Would it work?

Can't see the point. Why would you want to do that.
"Your first job is to prepare the soil.  The best tool for this is your neighbor's motorized garden tiller.  If your neighbor does not own a garden tiller, suggest that he buy one."

Well, lots of people on my allotment site grow other stuff like that - winter squash, onions, courgettes etc. The idea is to avoid having to weed too much.

It's not new but I've not seen anyone trying it with leeks.

They will grow OK and the mass of weeds that are often found when leeks are harvested would be avoided. I can see a problem when you come to lift them. How will you get the fork under them?

It may be a bit of a pain digging them up .
I can't see the point really  if they are spaced out say six to nine inches apart they are not difficult to weed between.

Hmmm yes, good point. Although I usually just ease a fork under a plant and pull it up and this can be done working in from one side. Having said that, sometimes I've found that the bigger leeks are dotted here and there, so getting at them could be a problem right enough.

Thanks everyone. Might give that some more thought before trying.
