Help needed for ideas of a chicken 'shed'
« on: June 14, 2012, 09:22 »
I currently have 15 chooks and 2 ducks living in 3 large coops..soon i want to buy a large wooden garden shed and convert it to house all my girls together, and sell my coops. This will take up less space then the 3 i already have, it'll be easier to clean 1 out insted of 3, but most importantly i will be able to access every nook and cranny to give it a through scrub etc.
Does anyone use a shed they've converted for their chooks? I'd really like to see some pics of how your shed is set up/adapted to accomodate their needs i.e perches, nest boxes, also i'll need to house my ducks at floor level, away from chicken perches :tongue2: don't think they'd appreciate the 'gifts' raining down on them from the roosting hens!!
My girls freerange by day, so it's only sleeping/laying quarters.

Any comments, ideas or pictures will be gratefully recieved

Many thanks

Kayleigh
A mixed flock of 15 chickens, 2 ducks, and 14 fertile eggs under broodies (fingers crossed).

Thats nearly what I did; however, I built a large permanent  run on to the end.   Got the chance of a 8x6 shed with good thick boards, and that was the basis of my chicken shack. I have half of the shed (with the door) as a conventional shed, which has food and bedding etc in it. I moved the other end wall into the middle of the shed, leaving a nice open ended shelter,  then build a walk-in run to join on to it. I was thinking about building coops in this open end of the shed, but my wife bought a cheap coop for the 'net which I just put in there. One thing that works really well is that we put a vinyl flooring offcut down, which curves up the sides of the shed; so cleaning out is very easy.
Let me know if this is of interest and I'll try to post a photo
