The Plot Thickens!
« on: May 22, 2012, 15:13 »
Two of my hens are three years old.  They squat for me, have brilliantly red combs, even go in the nest box every day for an hour or so.  BUT, no eggs.  None, for months now.     I always thought that being three years old they might put out an egg or two every once in a while.  Is this normal to be done so soon?
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

I wouldn't worry too much. Are they hybrids? I have 2 that are probably just over 2 & half years and I have exactly the same problem. One did manage to lay a thin shelled egg last week but thats about it!

If they hybrids then they are bred to lay prolifically in their first 1-2 years and then it slows down rapidly. As long as they appear healthy & happy, doing normal 'chicken' things then I would suggest that they are OK.

Thanks Helen!  That is a great relief.  They are hybrids - Black Rock & Calder Ranger.  They are getting pudgy since they stopped laying, but sure seem to be enjoying life!  Early retirement.  Time to expand the flock I guess.

I am also hoping to expand the flock by 1 or 2 in a few weeks time. I am half looking forward to it and half dreading it (not looking forward to integrating them with my existing 2!).
