Nettle liquid feed query
« on: April 23, 2012, 12:30 »
I read somewhere that you can make your own liquid fertiliser from nettles. My books also say that it is high in nitrogen, which if I'm right is good for leafy plants.

Can you use it on vegetables and if so are there any in particular which like it or those that I should avoid feeding it to?

is this for use as a spray or watering into the soil?
Sounds like a great idea ........ Just soak nettle leaves for a while?
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

I wasn't thinking of doing this at home, more in a covered butt at the lottie.
I was going to start the nettles off with some water and then leave open to dilute it out with rainfall. There's plenty of that about  :D

It's great for nitrogen Pony, and also the stems can be chucked around afterwards as well, because they take some time to break down, and by next year, they can easily be dug in.

In fact, I learned that the stems can even be washed out like flax, and a rough material can be woven, but that's going a bit too far I reckon...

The pong is awful, so add some comfrey and make it much worse, then do what we did, and added it all to a butt full ofbubbling liquid manure feed. The smell is disgusting, but the tomatoes just roared away, and didn't stop producing huge trusses - outside! The runner beans gorge on the stuff too!

I think we'll probably do two butts of the same mix this year for all the top veg, but keep it away from the roots, as they just swerve off sideways after a dollop of that...
