when should garlic be ready....also onion's
« on: April 19, 2012, 19:30 »
planted some garlic prior to winter and the actual plants are looking fine, however i pulled 1 today and it resembled a spring onion, the cloves had yet to form, am i been premature and is it still early to expect anything?

same with my onions the plants are about 8" high but the bulbs have yet to develop is this normal and is there still hope for them?

thanks

I pick my garlic when I come back off my jollies, which is early July.  Mine were planted last October.

With onions, I harvest mine at around August time or a bit later.

In any event, the stems should be turning yellow and dying off when they're ready to be picked.  Also on onions, look out for the seed pods.  These appear at the top of the stems and are tulip in shape.  Just chop these off, as it means the onions going to "seed".

The leaves will start to yellow. Have a furtle then to see if the cloves are a decent size. :)

Over-wintered onions should mature around June.

I start pulling them before that as soon as they are a useable size.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I always wait until all the garlic starts showing signs of yellowing, and then pull the smallest looking plant. If you pull them too soon, they wont keep. If you leave them tto long they will burst the skins and not keep.
Wait until the onions leaves yellow then start collapsing, genlty push a fork under each one and loosen the roots, and leave for a day or two when you just pull them and lay them somewhere dry.

I do as Totty does since I want them for storage. Mine are ready in early to mid July, depending on weather.

Should have qualified that - this is for garlic.

Onions are ready in later July early August. Sometimes they flop over by themselves, sometimes when a good sized is ready, you simply push over the tops by hand, leave for a week or two to 'finish off' and then take out to dry somewhere to 'cure'.

I could be wrong, but I'm assuming that the OP is referring to winter planted onions.

These should be mature in or around June, but they do not store well, hence my comment about pulling and using them as soon as they are big enough.
