Yolks pale, is that normal?
« on: April 04, 2012, 09:14 »
So far still only one of my three girls is laying.  Mrs P takes about 2 hours to produce and I've had 5 eggs so far.  They are still small and although they taste fine, the yolks are pale yellow, more so than shop eggs.  Is this because it's early days or might she be missing something from her diet or am I expecting deep golden yolks erroneously?

diet plays a major part in the yolk colour.
Different feed has different plants added to help achieve a specific colour - most include marigold or a relative of this.
I have 27 hens and they are all fed on the same feed but being free ranging they can also get different wild plants and seeds whilst out and about so their yolk colours can vary with them and from week to week and bird to bird  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

I also find that for the first couple of weeks, the yolks are fairly pale, and as they get into the swing of it, the yolks darken  :)

The eggs will get bigger in time. Try giving them some greens if they don't free range. Mine spend most of the day in the garden and produce deep orange yolks, my friend's hens are kept in their run and the yolks aren't anywhere near as dark.

Mine also spend all day pecking at grass, free ranging in the garden and they lay lovely golden yolked eggs. They are fed corn as they won't eat layers pellets  :tongue2:
I also give them sunflower hearts, raisins and live maggots as treats but the last is only occasionally.
spoilt or what!!

try them on layers mash - some of mine prefer this so I have to buy coarse layers mash and layers pellets. I feed the mash dry in a cat litter tray and have no mess from it at all  :)
Also some people find their hens prefer layers pellets mixed with warm water rather than dry  :)
