Spindly Broad Beans
« on: March 22, 2012, 10:19 »
I did a search for this topic and found one, but the problem was slightly different to mine. I started my broad beans in trays on a window sill in March. I know now that is not necessary. Anyway, I did it and they grew very quickly and very spindly and weak. I have them outside in a cold frame now but they are all lying flat. If I put them in the ground and support them will they recover or will they produce a reduced crop? I have resown some spare seeds outside so the option to throw them away is open.

Rapid spindly growth is usually caused by lack of light.

Beans grow very quickly once they get going.

With a bit of support they might do ok - beans are tough enough.

I find that very often beans sown in the ground catch up with those that I start in pots anyway! So perhaps check your soil is and pop a few in as insurance!

Lack of light, plus being too warm. Broad beans do not want to be indoors.

See how they go, but don't hold your breath!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Oh dear. Well, I have planted them out and have some spares going outside in pots.

Thanks.

They don't mind the cold at all so you could've saved some window-sill space  :D :D
