Asparagus Bareroots
« on: March 04, 2012, 21:22 »
Hi,

I received my Asparagus crown from T&M as a special offer, I had not planned to plant them out just yet.  Can I plant them in their planter and put it in the greenhouse?

thanks
Happiness is trying something new even if it doesnt work.

Why had you not planned to plant them out yet?  They are hardy plants as far as I am aware, so do not need to be under cover.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

plant them out alistar they will come to no harm as long as you give them a good covering to protect them from frost. Normally they would be planted up in april but thats in the north where i am from.  good tip is to put some well rotted manure below your planting surface this will give them a good feed ,when they get going a top dress once/twice a year with a general purpose feed " growmore or the likes" from then on it will keep them going well. I have had 20 crowns in for ten years now and they are fantastic eating, good luck. hope this helps  :)

Thanks Yorkie & Leeks R Us, it has been helpful.  I assumed, wrongly, since they were bareroot I would need to gently get them used to their new surroundings lol

Thanks for the help. As they say, every day is a school day  :)

They are tough, mine survived being dug up by a neighbour in error (long story), chucked in a dustbin over winter, then replanted in Spring when I found them, they still produced, but I left them alone to get over the shock  :D

Thanks to the advice given, I have now planted my 3 crowns in my planter based on the instruction on the leaflet.

We will wait and see.  I am told that I should not pick any shoots this years then only a few next year, with waiting till 2014 before croping?
