Getting Tomatoes to germinate
« on: February 28, 2012, 10:48 »
I have had my toms planted in post inside the windowsill for a week, keeping the tray underneath topped up with water when the soil dries out. I have a plastic dome covering the pots too for added heat. So far I have had nothing come up after a week. I have checked the temp (daytime) and they are 17.8 degrees C. Should they be up by now ?

My first lot took exactly a week, but they can take a bit longer, don't panic yet.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Assuming they were planted in damp compost - I certainly wouldn't be watering them!

They only need a little moisture and the plastic top will stop the compost drying out while you wait for germination.

There are gaps around the plastic top so some moisture will be lost. Just keeping the soil moist.

Wow, they have shot up. I will need to pot them on very soon at this rate but will they be ok in an unheated greenhouse now they have germinated ?

id say its a tad too early - however im a gambler when it comes to plants - so mine are going in this week (under a propagator lid)!

They won't be happy in an unheated greenhouse. May survive if you're lucky and don't get any hard frost, but they do need a bit of heat really. I can't give mine heat so won't be sowing them for a while yet.

It is too cold at night for them to be happy in an unheated greenhouse.

They will need to be kept on a windowsill, with foil behind them, and turn them every day so that they don't bend over too much.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I have sown four different types of tomato in the propagator (all at the same time)- Alicante, Sweet Million F1, Country Taste and an heirloom variety called Black Trifele.  The heirloom variety is the only one that has yet to germinate, and I'm not sure why?

I think other heirloom tomatoes mentioned on here this year have taken slightly longer to germinate than modern varieties.  Can you remove the germinated ones from the propagator and leave the heritage ones in?

Yes, I think that's what I'll do tomorrow.  Just need to snip the seed tray :D  It's the same with the aubergines - heritage ones have yet to germinate.
