Autumn planted alliums

I'm planning to plant some onions, garlic and maybe shallots. I got a few Japanese onion sets (approx. 10) from my lottie neighbour Gilbert but would like a few more. I've read a thread with a red onion variety called Electric mentioned by Aunty and WG. I'd like this one (yes, I'm a copycat! ). Aunty, WG (or anyone else that knows), where did you buy your sets from? I'm hoping someplace online so I can place an order right away. Gilbert bought his Japs from our allotment hut, but I now learn that he's not big on knowing variety names, he just plants what works for him year in year out, the old man (a la 'werks fer me  ' Munty style). I like to know my cultivars and a point in the right direction for a good hardy type (again online) would be greatly appreciated as I'd like to find out and plan next year!!

Shallots - what varieties are best and again, where to buy? Something I can plant in November/December please.. I'll be sharing with Gilbert, experiences of amounts will be greatly appreciated!

Garlic - I'm getting seed again to share with Gilly from our wonderful resident garlic expert  WG, so I'm sorted for that one

Trying organic gardening. Hoping to stick to it.

I got my Electric onion sets at a local garden centre

Shallots - never tried autumn-planting but I believe Jermor is popular.

When do you plant your shallots WG? I could again be a copycat and go for the easiest/best option   . Are they worth planting now at all? I could do Autumn and Spring I suppose... Oooh, I'm in danger of getting all confused planning now

I plant shallots sets in April, I guess.  Golden Gourmet I like, or Red Sun.

I also plant some shallot from seed (Ambition), for smoking.  They are F1 and expensive.

Shallots - to plant or not to...  Might do a small amount and again in the spring. Lets see what I can find for overwintering. I'd love to plant in some broadbeans too, and it's kinda getting late for that, and I've not enough beds ready yet, so we'll see...

Thanks peeps for sharing!

I'd estimate that 99% of folks plant shallots in spring.
