Help diagnosing poo :)
« on: January 16, 2012, 19:12 »
I've had a look through the poo guide, but just wanted to pick some brains, as I've had a good number of runny white poos, but have just wormed the hens with Flubenvet a month ago, and have just finished a course of Ivermectin for worms and lice, so would be really suprised if there is anything left lurking

Anyway, have a look and let me know what you think.

I've got two just point of lay who have started laying since Boxing day, and two  1year olds who haven't laid since there moult last Autumn.

The other query is about my Australorp, who does big loose poos, and I mean big! This is an early morning poo.

Sorry to be such a poo fixated chicken keeper, but just wanted to check  :D
Alice - Australorp
Bernadette - Barnevelder
Dora - Silver Grey Dorking
LilliBet - Cream Leg Bar

Very closely actually  Yes it does sound disgusting, but more than happy to poke about with a stick. I was even thinking of sending a sample to ChickenVet to get a proper parasite count.

Think I'll be sitting watching them all day Thursday to see who does what poos and how often.

I'm a bit confused as to why you haved wormed with both Flubenvet and ivermectin. Both are wormers. There is a possibility that worming twice close together has upset, slightly, their digestive system. You could try giving just a little live yogurt for a few days to redress the balance.

The white in the poos are urates. Chooks wee and poo in one. It could be they have been drinking more for some reason, or have you been feeding treats with a high water content.

Mine often do big poos like the one photographed and seem to be very healthy. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

the early morning poo is perfectly normal, they usually do a big one in the morning (try having a broody hen - theirs are HUGE and exceedingly smelly).
Kidney problems could show up as lots of urates and very runny but if your hens are otherwise perfectly normal then as has been pointed out it is probably a result of the extra worming. If you feed them a pro-biotic yoghurt do not give them a flavoured one - the sugar is not good for them. I give mine avipro plus which is a pro-biotic especially formulated for poultry (poultry can be lactose intolerant).
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks everyone, they were wormed with flubervet as that is what I normally used, but then noticed Alice had lice so treated them all with Ivermectin for the lice.

Usually give them Yeo Valley natural yogurt, so just taken a batch out now.

Glad to hear Alice's rather large first poo is normal, and yes a bit of a stinker too.   :tongue2:
