How do you make pumpkins seeds?!
« on: October 30, 2007, 21:29 »
Hi
Sorry for the most ridiculous question but my oh and me have been carving pumpkins tonight   and now I have a lot of mush and some seeds.  I gather you can wash off the gubbins and cook seeds to eat.  Do you eat the whole seed or do you have to open the tough outer bit?
Any help gratefully received.
Ness x
PS my pumpkin looked the best

If you roast them does it make them split open, or is it a flippin' tedious job.  Just asking cos I've always been curious, I never did a pumpkin this year.

You wash them off the gunk and spread out on a baking tray and roast dry until just about starting to gain colour.  Taste to check! It will take about an hour+. You got to shell them individually, as said, but well worth it, if they are ripe seeds.

Once ready, crunchy inside, You can salt them if you wish.

PS They can start flying  and jumping about all over the place once overdone.  They are unlikely to do that if you dry them on a towel before roasting. :)

I have never shelled my pumpkin seeds, just stick them on a baking tray and pop in the oven as gobs says. They are delish!

An hour! Mine just came out of the oven cremated after 10 mins!! My son said 'Mummy, I thought they were supposed to be yellow'. Grrrrr.

And on the subject, who said pumpkin carving was a fun activity for kids? My 3yr and 18mnth old boys have just sat and watched me grapple with a sharp knife for half and hour, trying not to swear.

Low heat, you are drying them, not baking.

Time is diff to say, depending on oven, temperature, moisture content, that's why tasting required. I'm sorry about your misshap, I have also burnt them before. :(  Easy to do!
And never carved one
  but been known to swear at icing for hours....

Cremated mine too!!!  My ovens like a furnace and I got distracted and burned them.  The few I salvaged were very nice though.  I gather you can eat them with the outside bit on, thats what I've been doing.
Still there always next year!
