« on: February 17, 2009, 21:06 »
I grew pumpkin last year ..first year of gardening veg for real. I had several pumkins..the first few here really nice..kind of nuty swet. The last few I needed to take in before they ripened and they have ripened in doors. The problem..while they are orange they don't really taste that good. Anyone any receipes to use up bland pumpkin ??

it is said that the taste is better if you roast it - then you can make soup, spiced or herbed up if need be.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I love all pumpkins (being veggie I find most vegetables just yummy!)   Try roasting, with other vegetables like peppers, whole onions, mushrooms etc...  or steamed with lots of butter and black pepper...  Lovely soups... pumpkin pie with cinamon (as a sweet dish)   there are so many great things to do with them.. Have you looked in the recipe section on this site???   I haven't checked it out but bet there are some good ones on there!

Soup is probably your best bet for a bland tasting one. I'd agree with Yorkie though - roasting it does make it taste sweeter and better.

Try adding a squash to the roast as well before blending - gorgeous tastes.

+1.  Pumpkins are from the class of vegetables that don't ripen off the plant.  We had several last year and they were uniformly disappointing.  I wouldn't bother trying to gussy them up, I don't think it's worth it.

You can add chunks of pumpkin to soups made mostly from other vegetables.  Or stews, but they fall like a floury potato, so you may not like the texture.

Grow winter squash instead!
Loads of varieties to try of all shapes, szes and colours and all superior to pumpkins when it comes to the important bit of cooking and eating
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

winter squash are so easy to grow

Raise plants in pots
Plant out end of May through weed-proof membrane
Harvest Oct

Any seed catalogue will have so many varieties to chose from not just the butternut of supermarkets.

My Favourites:--
Uchiki Kuri     reliable, early
Buttercup      good flavour
Crown Prince   keeps well, good flavour

100 more to choose from and wait till we start with the recipes - you'll never waste space on Pumpkins again!!
