I agree that rhubarb can grow on for ever -- my Dad's plants stayed int he same spot for over 40 years before I rehomed them on my plot.

(They do need feeding of course)

Ah!  I was wondering if I could offer one of my plants to another on my allotments.  I don't suppose winter would happen to be a suitable time to dig it up & move it?
Toiling through 100sq metres of clay - And I don't actually eat much veg!

Yes, winter is the time to be splitting and moving rhubarb.  Get a decent rootball and you can probably use a couple of spades to chunk it into pieces if big enough.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

yes , rhubarb is a "bulletproof" plant and can grow on for yonks BUT lifting every 4 or 5 years and splitting up and replanting ensures it regenerates nicely and you have other bits to give away...  who wants one giant rhubarb when you can have a patch of 10 smaller ones allowing you to force 2 or 3 each year and then rest for 2 years......  its just good husbandry - if you are happy with a "bigun" then stay with it, we all do what we feel need...
