I'm so impatient
« on: September 30, 2007, 19:26 »
Well I have been thoroughly bitten by the veg growing bug. I'm so excited that I want to fall asleep and wake up in spring so I can start planting. I'm so glad I've got this site to come and read more and more and learn about veg growing.

I've been looking on a site called seedfest which seems to do a good deal on seeds has anyone else checked this site out?
I don't have a drink problem. I drink, I get drunk, I pass out. No Problem.

Me too CB.
I want it to be March tomorrow morning.

But I will have to console myself with all those Winter evenings perusing my seed catalogue with a glass of something to keep the chill out

One of the most important elements of gardening is patience. If you try & plant too early to you stand a good chance of getting poor results and thereby getting disheartened, thus putting you off what you are at the moment straining at the lease to get on with.

Now is the time to square up the plots, plan, clean up, clean out, put your winter onions & garlic in if you want to plant something.

DO NOT treat the earliest sowing date on a packet of seed as a target. Sowing into cold ground can lead to tears. Far better to wait another 4 weeks. I learnt from my Grandfather who was by profession a gardener. I've quoted this before & make no apologies for doing so again, he always used to say to me "Don't worry boy, things will always catch up". Never found him wrong yet.

If you've nothing to put in it now, Boothy, I'd wait until spring & have a pristine one, rather than one with a coating of winter muck & algae!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've learnt that already in the first year.  Today I pulled a teeny tiny carrot which was one of the first I sowed.  The ones I sowed two months later are doing so much better.

But on this topic in general - I'm not impatient, I need time to dig, weed, dig and weed.  I've been too caught up in the complexities of maintaining the crop and have fallen behind with the hard graft stuff.

im impatient due to the fact that we have planned the garden more for next year.the house we are in we only moved in april so it was a case of growing whatever and putting it in.
we have now gotto the stage with the house and garden to say well hang on i dont like that so i think i will do this and that to it.
next year im doing chillies and marrows and creating lavender hedges also growing a load more herbs and i cant wait.

There's always lots to do in winter. I have to repair the roof of my shed (soon!), paint it, tidy the inside up a bit; do some maintenence on the edges of the beds; build a new compost bin; finish digging the pond; prune an assortment of things; resurface the paths; work out the planting plan for next year; sterilise the propagater and root trainers etc for the spring rush....oh, lots to do, even if you don't do winter digging which I don't.

Just remember that preparation work is essential...it's not just about putting the seeds in and watching them grow. The more chores you get out the way over the winter, the better next season is in my experience. A couple of years back we had a really mild January when I was up the allotment nearly every day, and it was the most relaxing year I'd had yet simply because I wasn't trying to catch up with myself all the time. And living as I do in Lowland scotland, I can't plant till at least two weeks if not three after you southerners.

SF - I hope you're not pruning any shrubs or trees at this time of year. There's a great chance they'll suffer big setbacks if not diseases. Best to wait until spring on those.

So much to do, but so little time.
