Apricots Slow to Ripen.
« on: September 03, 2011, 12:38 »
I have a lovely Apricot tree and this is the first year I have had fruit (frost must have spared some of the flowers) but it seems slow to ripen, they have gone from mid green to light green however, in the last week or so.  Just wondered if anyone knew are they likely to ripen yet or rot.

I am sure if it was trained I would have fruits by now, any ideas anyone. :D

To ripen it needs sunlight and warmth.
Which being Lancashire could be the problem.
A warm September will help assuming we get one of long enough duration.

When trained it usually means trained to a fan shape against a south facing wall.
South facing meaning it gets the sunlight and heat and the wall would get warm also and so maintian extra warmth after the sun has dropped.

For the UK the apricot should be an early variety, these in effect need the least sun to ripen so there is a better chance of one ripening in the UK on the lesser sunlight and warmth we get. Do you know the variety.

If it is a tree then it should be in a sheltered sunny position that faces south.

I guess there is not much that you can do except wait and hope.

Think the variety is Moorpark or something like that. ???

Well, have picked four and given one back to the birds as it had been tampered with. :tongue2:  Here is hoping to many more next year.  :D
