Boys or Girls?? - SLW
« on: September 03, 2011, 18:57 »
Hi everyone, the age old question I'm afraid.  These little ones are nearly 10 weeks and i just wondered if there might be any Silver Laced Wyandotte experts out that that could assist.

As you can see only one has the correct rose comb but apart from that they are pretty identical in my eyes.

Where did you get them from?  Even as hatchery stock 2/3 with single combs is pretty poor.

I hatched almost 30 dottes this year and didn't get a single comb at all.

Rose combs are more difficult than singles to sex, though I've found with dottes I've been able to tell by about 15 weeks, but mainly by the appearance of the pointy hackle feathers.

The two with single combs... the combs are pretty big fot 10 week old pullets, so you may have at least two boys.

(personally I would have culled the two with singles combs on hatching... but that's just me)

Hi, i have only got the two, one with a single comb and one with a rose comb, the pictures are individual and then the two of them together.

It really doesn't matter to me whether they meet the breed standard as I won't be breeding from them anyway, I just think they are really pretty and they add a bit of interest and colour to my flock.  If either of them do turn out to be girls I'm sure their eggs will be just as enjoyable  :)
