Floating Peas.
« on: August 02, 2011, 18:38 »
Hi All,

I`m just trying to freeze my first lot of peas and reading John`s book I should put them in water to find out if any of them have pea moth grubs in them. Problem is that about 60% of them are floating.

I have opened a couple of pods to find the peas distroyed and a small grub chomping away. Looking at the floaters in the water there doesn`t seem to be any damage to them. Would the grub leave a hole in the pea where it had got in?

I don`t want to freeze them if they are infested but I don`t want to throw away good peas that float anyway and I`m too dumb to tell the difference.
I can remember when it were all fields round `ere.

you usually see frass (caterpillar poo) when you open the pods.
If the pod looks clean, then I blanch and freeze them

That`s them done.

Re-reading the book I think John means the maggots float and can be skimmed off, not the peas!

When you blanch peas 60% always float. After 2 mins blanching they all sink.

I don't blanch my peas, seemed fine and lasted all through last winter into spring.
