Black Rock with no comb - normal???
« on: June 30, 2011, 12:44 »
Hi,
couple of things - is it normal for a hen not to have a developed comb?  I think she is a black rock, looks more like a pheasant than a hen bless her?

Also, we are keeping our girls in an Eglu Cube, we are getting eggs daily but I have no idea who is laying - I thought it was my Coral, but could she be sitting on a Blue Haze egg and or via-versa??
I have had 3 pale/whitish/pink eggs [but caught the Coral sitting on one of them hence the confusion] typical of a Blue girl, and one traditional brownish one - again, no idea who popped this one out.

Anyone with an Eglu Cube who has had similar concerns/thoughts, do get in touch.  I think they are sleeping in the nesting area but I guess this isnt a problem as they dont lay at night??

Some breeds of hens don't have combs.  My silkie cross, Elanor, is one.

I find that the main problem with them sleeping in the nesting box is that although they don't lay at night, they poo a lot at night so the eggs the next day get soiled! A real pain!
After a while you get to know who's laying what by the timings and their egss are usually quite distinctive to the trained eye :-)
Still sometimes not sure though :-))

If I was made to live in a plastic box I would also refuse to grow a comb. :D
Any day above ground is a good day.

She didnt have a comb when I got her, nothing to do with where she is living, she like a lot of other hens are happy in their Eglu Cube and at least they are safe from foxes when they are not either with me in either a large safe secure garden or inside.

How old is she? Very young pullets tend to have almost non existent combs.

This was my thought too.  I don't have any experience with Black Rocks but here are a couple of photos of my girls.

Minnie-Rose the Barnevelder was about 26 weeks old when this photo was taken:

Pearl the Light Sussex was about 21 weeks old:
