Broad bean pollination
« on: June 24, 2011, 16:18 »
Our broad bean plants look fantastic and have loads of flowers on them but they don't seem to be getting pollinated very well: we've only got a few pods forming. Is there anything we should be doing? I think we've got plenty of insects, because the peas next to the broad beans have got lots of pods forming.

I've just pulled mine out. They looked great and had loads of flowers, but beans never set. :(

Peas are self pollinated so do not need insects.

Broad beans are partly self pollinated but do need help from insects to get a good set.

If the flowers come out when the insects are not about, windy or wet days, they may not pollinate.

Mine are also very disappointing this year.  Loads of bees around but not many pods remain.  My only guess is that sparrows were in some way to blame.

I don't even have flowers so count yourself lucky  ;)

Should think you'll be fine.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

About half of ours have flowers, the other half haven't. We won't be getting many Broad Beans this year.  :(

so it's not just my broad beans then!  I inspected the plants to find a few well developed pods from earlier flowers but none above had set - I suspected the wet windy weather we had over June was responsible.
