What to do?
« on: June 25, 2011, 16:08 »
Hi all

I have been looking into incubating some eggs (Cream legbars) and trying to do as much research as possible to see if I am able to do it. The one thing in my head is if I get cockerels how will I deal with them? I live in a built up area and am not able to keep a cockerel as my neighbors may try to cull me if I did  :(.

Also any thoughts on the Brinsea Eco Glow brooder?

Thanks for any help

Steve

You are very right to think about what to do with the cockerels.  A little over half the eggs that hach will be cockerels on average.  You will either have to rehome or cull them.

There is some good advice on how to cull cockerels.  If you type culling cockerels into the search box in the top right-hand corner you should find plenty of information.

Also it is not easy to tell which are cockerels and which hens until they start crowing or laying.

I have never used in incubator as I am using a broody hen.  I'm sure someone with experience in incubators will be along to advise you.

In the meatime good luck  :D

PS don't forget pictures of the chicks when they hatch  :)

You stretch their necks Steve you won't find a ready market for even giving them away.  If you aren't prepared to do this don't hatch any eggs.

at least cream legbars can be sexed as young as day olds unlike some breeds:-

Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks for the advice. I will have a think about it maybe I am better looking at the other option of buying chicks that are sexed, and miss the hatching stage.

Thanks again Steve
