Can someone recommend some easy plants?
« on: July 06, 2011, 16:17 »
I am no gardener at all!!!! I have never had plants in my garden and even my grass is in tubs!!
I am looking to grow some hanging baskets (I can't have anything at ground level due to my pets), However, I think I want the impossible, it needs to be easy to look after - I can water every day but thats about it - and would like something that looks pretty all year round.
At the risk of sounding stupid  ::) I am thinking maybe summer flowers and winter flowers in the same tub so it always looks nice, how often would they need re-planting - if that is even possible?
Or is there a flower equivalent of an evergreen tree?
The glass is neither half empty or half full - it is simply the incorrect size! Find a new glass!

All-year-round baskets will be tricky.  The compost will get exhausted quickly and will need regular feeding, if not replacing.

I suggest you look for evergreen plants such as Ivy, to hang down, and then look at adding colourful plants according to season e.g. pansies / violas for the winter, and whatever you like in the summer.  But you'll need a relatively large basket if you want to keep it going like this, as the evergreen roots will expand.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thank you so much, that was really helpful.  :) I thought I was asking for the impossible!  >:(
The ivy is a good idea, now just to figure the rest out.   :wacko:Re planting once a year wouldn't be too bad - I know people that have baskets that only flower for a couple of weeks a year, and the rest of the time don't look great!

Personally, I'd aim to replant twice a year - once for summer, and once for late autumn - spring.

It's not difficult at all  :)  If you want to swot up I'd borrow a book from the library. I have one which is for baskets all year round and it gives good pictures and what's in each basket and to look after them.  You can use tumbling tomatoes in a hanging basket and they do very well, strawberries too or a basket of herbs would be good  :)

Alpines would make a good all year no maintenance hanging basket plant. They tend to like poor soil, and dry, well draining soil.
I have some sedums and other matt-forming alpines around a tree that are doing very well, i chose them because the tree takes loads of water and nutrients from the surrounding area, even the grass is yellow ish in that area.
Sedums especially should look nice hanging from baskets, even when not flowering they have nice foliage.

Some herbs grow well in baskets for a while.

Thyme is good, sage is alright until it gets too big.

Strawberries are a great success too, and you can get pink flowers ones.

Pansies are excellent as they go on for absolutely months if you take off the dead flowers and give them some tomato fertiliser occasionally.

Definitely pansies - there are summer and winter/spring types. Also, on the top you could sneak in some autumn- and/or spring-flowering outdoor cyclamen. You could have another basket with evergreen ivies and grasses with miniature daffs for spring. Another one could be for tuberous begonias for late summer/autumn. The first and third will definitely need its compost replacing after flowering; the evergreen one may need some removal of the oldest and new added. All would need feeding and for ease I would use feed granules. The world is your whats-name..! :tongue2:
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
