Stroke, Mareks or Wry neck?
« on: June 12, 2011, 09:33 »
I have 3 appenzellers (did have 4 but one just dropped dead - no warning so assumed this was due to a heart attack  :(), another keeps getting a swelling on her foot - again a symptom of a heart problem, and this morning one came out of her coop, stretched her neck to one side then fell over.
She keeps falling over onto one side flapping like mad. I have placed her in a cat box to stop the others doing their natural thing and pecking her to death. After an hour I let her out as she seemed to be standing ok but again the same symptoms.
I have critical care powder and human multivitamins which I could crush (they have vitamin E in them which helps with wry neck), any thing else I can do to help her or is it a case of euthanasia?
Staffies are softer than you think.

I'm so sorry Joy, I have no idea.  We did lose another BPM the other day whose head was right back onto her head, but it wasn't sideways.

So I can't help I'm afraid.  You know what Brian's advice is!

Good luck!

after losing the first one and the other getting the swelling (it may even be this one - I am avoiding holding her to check her feet so as not to stress her out any more - you know what a temper these appenzellers have got like their dad) I am convinced it is her heart and a stroke - it seems to be just down one side.
I will try the critical care formula and a bit of peace and quiet for today to see if she improves.

well I am ruling out Mareks, she is not young nor has she lost weight and become lethargic (a symptom of an older bird with it), her eyes are clear, her wattles are bright and she is a feisty thing as are her sisters.
The more I think about it the more I am convinced it is her heart.
Fingers crossed she makes an improvement - if not then she will go to the vet for an autopsy just to make sure it isn't anything contagious.

she is standing and eating - have put her on un medicated chick crumb and she has critcal care dissolved in water along with some multivitamins. I have checked over her sisters and it seems she is the one with the possible heart problem  :( so not looking too good for her.
One of her sisters has been to visit the sick bay to see how she is doing as has the old cockerel which is quite sweet.

So sorry to read your news, joyfull   :(

I lost one of my Speckled Sussex last year, the vet diagnosed Marek's but as my birds were in the care of a friend at the time I'm still no wiser if you were to ask me how it looks.

I wish you all the best & a speedy recovery for your poorly one...

xx

just a quick update on my little appenzeller- she was kept confined for a few days with chick crumb, mixed corn and critical care formula, She was let out at about 5 is every evening away from the others and gradually she improved. In fact she is now back outside with her mates and so long as she doesn't try to run too quick she is doing just fine  :D
Such a transformation over 5 days  :D
