Pink hawthorn
« on: June 13, 2011, 08:44 »
Ive seen the most georgeous tree, it is a pink hawthorn.
After googling it Ive discovered it is a Midland Hawthorn/Double Pink Hawthorn or a 'Crataegus laevigata ‘Rosea Flore Pleno’ to give it its latin name.
I want two but they are around £40 each. Thats a lot of money for a fancy hawthorn! :o
So having a rummage round the bottom of these lovely trees, there are no babies, there are babies all around the bottom of the normal hawthorns nearby so Im thinking this tree is a specialist grown, difficult to reproduce and therefore stupidly expensive hawthorn tree as I can buy 10 normal hawthorn whips for about £6.
Ive taken cutting and used root powder but they all died.
Is there any way I can grow some of these myself either from cuttings or the haws which will apparently come later this summer or are they a special grafted tree that Im going to have to pay dearly for?
Thnaks in advance!

Thank you for your reply :)
The one Ive seen is much more cerise than that though there may be some variation. The flowers are just like little roses.
There are no seedlings growing below the tree at all but further up the road there are loads growing around the bog standard hawthorns. They are all bordering a cemetery so are under the same type of keep.
Ive read that there is a lot of hydbidisation going on where they are mixed. Wonder if it cant grow seeds if it is a specially grown one. At the moment the little berries are coming on the normal hawthorns near it but there are none on the pink one.
Im going to mark the tree and keep going back to it. I have read that with hawthorn although the seeds are there early they are not ready until October so I will have another look then.

I got given one - so will check tonight if it is grafted or not.
The true Midland Hawthorn are white flowered and are distinguished by their leaves having different lobes and the haws having multiple seeds in rather than the common Hawthorn which has just one. The Midland one is quite rare to find in the wild now.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Have a look for Hawthorn "Paul's Scarlet", it's a very pretty double pink blossom. You might find it a bit cheaper especially if you go for bare rooted trees - but you'd have to wait until the autumn to buy/plant.

Thanks for that Endymion!
Have found these which are nearly the same but will have to wait until autumn now to get some :)
