Crop Issues -advice needed please??
« on: May 27, 2011, 18:32 »
hello all, one of my girls i noticed had a very large crop this afternoon, so i had a feel and it is rather hard and is about the size of a golf ball. she was fine this morning (i like a cuddle before work, gives me a chance to check them over before i go). She seems fine in herself and is eating and drinking normally, no smelly breath or anything like that and she came running over to greet me as usual, but the other two don't seem to have the same thing, theirs are soft and squishy. Any advices would be appreciated. ive heard to use olive oil if it is impacted, but not sure if it is and how do you administer it if i need too?  :(
love my chickens me! :-)

Hi neenyneen, if it was impacted crop, it would still feel hard and round in the morning.  I think she just sounds like a greedy little girl who fills her crop right up before bedtime!  ;)

Are the other 2 crops soft and squishy all the time or just at night?  Maybe they drink more than her?

Thanks Grannie, the other 2's crops are usually squishy-ish, i mean you can tell they have been eating, but they just aren't as hard as gingers crop, i shall check in the morning to see if there is any change. all three's crops were empty this morning with no lumps or anything, maybe im just an over paranoid mummy, still all new to me, its been 7 weeks this Friday - still no eggs either!  ::)

Sometimes if they stuff themselves the crop can be as large and hard as a cricket ball, which can look rather alarming.

Have another feel in the morning, and it will have probably gone down. (be prepared from some LARGE SMELLY poos!)
