Asparagus Pea
« on: May 25, 2011, 12:16 »
Hi All,
I bought a packed of these because the picture on the pack looked lovely - all the right criteria for growing veg!
Anyway I lost the packet and am wondering, do you know if they need support to grow up or do they just sit like a bush please?
Mine are only about an inch tall but I am planning ahead and making supports for the normal peas and wondeer if these guys need some too?
Thanks

;)First time for me too-I`m led to believe they have a bush like habit, do not need support and plant at 12" spacing.  ::)

My understanding is that they grow the same as ordinary peas, and so could probably use the support

They don't grow very tall Sarahjane, and I must admit they don't have much taste, but picked when small, steamed and tossed in a little cream and black pepper, lovely!

Thanks Guys
I will keep an eye on them and wont build them any support unless they start to look like they are going to fall over.
I did a google search and other peoples reports suggested they were pretty yuk to eat so I will try your cream and black pepper idea

Thanks

Tried the a couple of years ago.

I liked them a lot for their dry, veggy flavour, but they're an acquired taste. Mrs Groqster said 'no' for the next year though...

No need to stick them, as they don't grow very high. The best bit is their deep red flowers, which are utterly beautiful!

Oh I agree Growster, the flowers are lovely!

My youngest daughter Nicola loved them in the cream and black pepper Sarah, but as I only see her once a year, it wasn't worth growing them again!  But you don't know until you try them.  You may love them, but just remember, pick while small, about 1-1.5 inches long
