Swedes in cells?
« on: May 06, 2011, 09:11 »
Can Swedes be started off in cell trays?

I sowed 4 rows of swedes last year and lost them all to flea beetle, the leaves were like lace curtains (not mine, i don't have them, my mum does) and they just died.
Just hopeing to get them off to a good start but as they're a root veg (brassica really but you know what i mean) wasn't sure if you can do it!

Good question Stompy, like you I also lost a lot of swedes to flea beetle last year (and raddish). If they have been succsesfull in jiffies, I think i,ll have a go at growing them in root traners as an experiment.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.

I think swedes are fine started off in modules.  I bought mine from the garden centre (big mistake but lets not go there again) and anyhow they produced lovely big swedes just in the middle of summer not winter  Taught me a lesson always check when plants should be planted not go by what the garden centre is selling  :nowink:

Last year I was given some swede sown in a deep tray , they were very" leggy " and didn't appear to be any use, anyway I planted them and they were the best Ive ever grown,

Sounds good as i sowed a couple of trays of cells last weekend.
Not that i hold out much hope as our patch has never been good for swede.
