Courgette / Marrow plant too heavy...... ?Support?
« on: August 30, 2007, 12:12 »
My one marrow/courgette plant is growing really well, and I'm very pleased and proud of it. It seems to be too heavy for it's stalk to support it thpough, and some leaves have broken abd the plant seems to have keeled over. How do I support it with bamboo?
Jac

Trying organic gardening. Hoping to stick to it.

The fruits normally rest on the ground.  :?

It's the heavy fruit causing it to keel over WG. My stay in hospital last week didn't help, there's now a marrow there (bigger than courgette but not so big yet) that we've decided to leave and see how bit it'll grow. I'm picking at least 1-2 courgettes/week. Shall I just leave the plant as it is, don't worry about it? It seems fine otherwise....

Sometimes mine start to rot a bit if they are left on the ground, so I may put a brick under the fruit to hold it up, but usually the plants do grow along the ground, they don't grow upwards on their own.

Apparently though the french grow them up canes like we do runner beans.  It was on The Big Dig programme once.  This lady made a square with 4 canes, and planted a courgette plant at each corner and was going to trail them up that.

Mine however, I plant on top of my full compost heap, and they grow along it and down the sides.  I've also got 2 in old compost bags stood on end and they grow down the sides of them too!

I've a piece of wood underneath it Grannie. Might try the compost heap method next year.
