Putting new chicks in with the pack
« on: May 04, 2011, 13:39 »
Is there any particular time I should be looking at introducing my broody hen and her new chick to the rest of the crew?  They have been in a rabbit hutch with a small run at the side of the other hens run but mum was not happy with the confined quarters and got out several times.  Her chick is a couple of weeks old now so I decided to take down the netting between the two runs and see what happened....
Not much apart from the greedy sods eating all the chick food!!  They do a very good job of ignoring her despite her constant cheeping (note how I keep saying her...fingers crossed).  It was a lot easier to re introduce her and broody than it was to introduce three new hens last year and mum seems to have gone up the pecking order a bit too.  Is this all fairly normal as I was expecting a lot more fuss?!
