Cucumbers
« on: April 28, 2011, 12:11 »
Hello

I've just read that cucumbers prefer to grow in the shade.  Is this correct?

Thanks
Beth

They tend to crisp up in full sun in the greenhouse, so need to be shaded.
Outside where there's no glass, mine grow just fine in the sun :)

Do you mean the whole plant dries up or the cuke itself dries up?  We planted ours in the poly last year which is shady-ish till around noon then in full sun till sundown - ours grew like triffids!!

Mine were in full sun outside last year and I had the best crop I have ever had.  Previously they had been shaded for half the day.  I came to the conclusion the plants want sun or perhaps warmth.  The fruits hide under leaves anyway.

Sorry, I meant the leaves can go dry and crispy in the greenhouse, as they like humidity. I'm going to float some polysheet over my greenhouse ones this year to help with that.
It is often more humid in a polytunnel, so they are usually fine in there anyway :)
