redmite
« on: April 25, 2011, 21:03 »
Hi everyone,
i have made myself a henhouse/run out of an old shed/greenhouse, with all glass removed, im very happy with it, theres nothin like making something that costs nothing, but i am worried a little bit about redmite, is it inevitable, in a wooden coop that you will get a infestation of them, can i do anything to prevent it happening, painting over all the wood surfaces, for example, the shed an greenhouse has a concrete base, and is built on 4 course of bricks, will this help. I would much rather do something before the event than after, any advice,
p.s how do i upload photos onto the site??????
with love from the girls.......

Cleaning - think that would be the best option and having a definite routine, I use dusting powders and some sprays, also have tried coke on the perch and perch edges as I read somewhere if you get mites it strips them of their protective coating and the dry out and die, but I jeyes fluid the shed every week unless the weather is no good for it to dry out then I lightly spray the perch area and hopefully do a full clean the following week - I have had no problems and as all the girls are out of the coop for the day it has time to air - there are other things on the market for you to use, but the jeyes works for me.  Enjoy the chickens. :)
