New veg' for 2011.
« on: April 24, 2011, 19:09 »

"This year I are be mainly " growing a gourd called "Uchiki Kuri".   Well, with a name like that, who wouldn't ?   Anyone have knowledge of this gourd?   Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Very tasty squash if memory serves right; unusual looking too.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I grew this one last year - 4 squashes per plant as I recall, quite early for a winter squash each between 1-2Kg. Lovely nutty flavour, supposed to store well but we ate all ours as soups etc by November. Just sowed this years......

Best of luck with them and remember to water well.

I'm trying these for the first time this year. Are they one of the really big plants or one of the smaller ones? Just wondering how many I can cram into the space I have.

Not a huge sprawler, lovely fruits with bright orange, sweet tasty flesh.
I plant mine about a metre apart, with a stick near the root, to mark where to feed and water  :)
I ate my last one in February

This is my first attempt with winter squash, and I'm doing Rolet Gem, Crown Prince and Uchiki Kuri, so a few months down the line I'm going to be back with questions about harvesting, storing, getting the wretched things open and cooking them :)

Im growing "Golden Houdian" for the first time wanted either Uchiki kuri or Crown prince but struggled to get hold of them over here in the G C's and also giving the good old Butternut a bash thanks to freebies on a mag.

Is 4 fruits the norm for Squash plants ? and are they self fertile ?

We're trying butternut and Atlantic giant just for fun!

Shokkyy- we planted Rolet last year- very prolific- had soooo many but we thought they tasted really bland, literally tasteless.. not repeating that again! maybe we did something wrong? Don't know what anyone else thought?
