marrow and cucumber from last year
« on: April 25, 2011, 13:36 »
I still have a totally intact marrow (and cucumber) from last year, sitting on my kitchen work surface. Will I be able to grow plants from any of the seeds ,or should I have taken them out of the fruits and dried them in the autumn?

Not the best idea, not because of the germination issue, but the fact that cucurbits (which both of yours are) have a particular talent for cross-pollinating with other types.

That doesn't affect the nature of the fruit obtained in the first year, but the seeds from them are likely to result in very different fruits next time around.

Of course, there is always the possibility of accidentally discovering a cucumber variety without suicidal tendencies, or a squash plant which produces dozens of delicious fruits on a small compact bush!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
