Chicken coop disinfectants
« on: April 14, 2011, 17:47 »
Bio VX, Interkokask, Rhodasept, Vanodine v18 - do any of you very knowledable people know which of these are the strongest/safest and/or what are the differences.   I have looked on the internet and they all seem to be anti-viral and anti bacterial, but I'm struggling to find any more information.

I lost all my chickens last year, to what may have been Marek's.  I have some more coming in 3 weeks.  I'm not usually overkeen on chemicals, but think it would be a good idea to zap the hen house (and pen?) before they come, since it will have a couple of weeks to wear off.

But haven't a clue which is best.  Does anyone have any advice?
Many thanks.

Does stalosan f kill more 'things' than bio dry?

Ok now found Virkon s that kills bird flu, do all the above not do that?

can you not just use Jay's Fluid?
The best way to learn to do something is to do something.

Bill, believe it or not Jeye's fluid is not the king of disinfectants ;)  A few years ago it had to be reformulated as it previously contained now banned substances.  Consequently, the efficiency of it decreased.

Anyway, it is never a good idea to use one particlar disinfectant all the time, because over time the microbes will develp resistance.

Modern disinfectants have been tested, and can prove themselves to be x% efficient agaist viruses, bacteria, fungus, and in some cases (like Virkon S, I believe) prion diseases.

In SusieB's case, where she lost her birds to Mareks (which is a herpes virus) disease, you would need to be sure that the disinfectant you were using is a proven viricide :)

Virkon  and Rhodasept seems to kill everything including small animals, the lethal dose for rats is mentioned in the safety data. as is permanent eye damage.  They are the only ones I can find that mentions Mareks' but they are too scary for me, as I'm not good at being careful with chemicals.

I think I'll go for Interkokask Ready to Use, which is anti-viral and no mixing and one bottle will clean the coop.  Thanks for the links to safety data joyfull, it was very helpful.

I hear you on that I knew it had been changed shame though it was great stuff.
