broccoli seedlings falling over
« on: April 07, 2011, 16:17 »
Hi,

The broccoli seeds I put into modules have started to grow but it seems the weight of the leaves are causing them to fall over, see pictures.

Have I let them get too leggy? Can I replant them deeper or should I start again?

They have been on the windowsill since planting.

Thanks,
Steve

Brassicas shouldn't be grown indoors; it's too warm for them which makes them grow leggy, bend towards the light, (which might be insufficient) then fall over (just like yours!)

A cold greenhouse is the most protection they should have, but with temperatures the way they've been the last few days they would probably be better off placed outdoors.

As to whether they will recover, I haven't grown brassicas for several years (mainly due to unsuitable soil); I'm sure someone else will offer an opinion on that.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I'm sure they will be fine  :)

Just plant them up to their bottom leaves when you transplant, but get them out into the fresh air, as Jay says, but probably somewhere shady for a while to minimise the shock

Are you doing the summer flowering broccoli? I only ask because I've just sown mine (it's outside in a zip-up-greenhouse-shelf thing) and I won't do the the over-wintering seeds until May/June.
I find that works well for me. It means I haven't got pots of brassicas becoming triffid-like while I wait for the garlic to ripen.

they are not falling over. they are just leaning towards sun. happens to all the plants in the windowsill.
silverfoil backing or a light coloured curtain backing (in my case) is a good idea to reflect sun.
and brocs... can go straight outside in the coldframe after sprouting (mine has gone out on 4th day after seeding)
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

yep, looks like they are all leaning.

You can repot them in slightly bigger pots and put them in deeper. i;ve done this with my brussel sprouts this week, cabbage and cover up with compost to just under the new leaves. just need to do the same to the cauliflower and brocolli . determined to grow these this year  8)

It's called "phototrophism" when plants grow towards the light source. Mine are like that too which has reminded me to get them outside during the day - thanks..1
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
