Pea problem
« on: April 06, 2011, 22:49 »
I've grown peas for years and stuck to 'Hurst Greenshaft' but thought i'd give 'Kelvedon Wonder' a try. But the Kelvedon wonder peas I sowed on the allotment have all rotted and out of 400 odd seeds, only 3 came though!

I did a little test in my greenhouse and sowed 50 Hurst Greenshaft and 50 Kelvedon wonder. I treated them both the same (water/light) and I had the same result. All the Hurst Greenshaft came up, but only about 6 Kelvedon Wonder came up! I looked in the compost and they've done the same thing and have rotted!!??

Is there something im missing with Kelvedon Wonder?

Could possibly be a bad batch?
I have grown both for a long time with no problems at all in the same conditions, so it's not a problem with the variety

I did wonder if it was a batch problem, and one of my things to do tomorrow is sow some from a different supplier!....will keep and eye!

The answer, grow hurst greenshaft  ;)
Over the years I have tried different peas and hurst greenshaft have by far been the best for me, thats all I ever grow now.

You get more peas in the pod with HG than with KW too  :D

A similar thing happened last year, with a lot of peoples Early Onward peas.
Most seed retailers buy their stock from the same wholesale suppliers, so perhaps a change in variety would work rather than buying another pkt of KW.

I have grown Meteor in guttering, same compost, same spacing, same depth, same watering and light,  yet one gutter is full of fat healthy seedlings the other, I think there is a dozen straggly jobs.  . :tongue2:  .  .now whuy ?   Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Hi,
I've sown loads of Kelveden wonder this year and had at least 98% germination rate.  They're all really healthy looking plants.
However, I always start my peas off in the unheated greenhouse, that way I can make sure the soil is warm enough to encourage germination and I can ensure that they have the right amount of water.
As soon as they're through I start to harden them off before planting them outside.

I have had that problem with greenshaft where the seeds rot away, think it might be over watering and too much heat or humidity in the green house that rots it away in the compost. i have changed to growing Onward for curiosity and test the yield and see how they grow. grown them in trays in the green house, transplanted them outside, they're growing up and so far looking good and strong
