Potatoes - should I start again?
« on: April 08, 2011, 11:54 »
Never really tried growing veg before but on the spur of the moment bought some red Duke of York seed potatoes and planted them 2 weeks ago.  With glorious hindsight, having since looked at pics on-line of chitted potatoes, the sprouted bits (about 2") on mine were withered and blackened.  As we're very pushed for space, is it worth leaving them in to see what happens (currently no growth showing) or whip them out and buy/plant some more?

Don't know what made me buy them... I'm usually very fussy about what my money goes on, plant wise :(

some chits do look very dark, though.
Why don't you just dig one up and have a look to see what's happening, they may be growing nicely.
If all seems to be growing ok, then just replant and let them carry on

Two weeks isn't an excessive length of time for shoots to appear (depends on several factors including how deep you planted them.)

The chits were obviously poor but the seeds should still be able to produce some more; I'd be more than tempted to dig one up to see what's happening, you may be pleasantly surprised, but if not at least you won't waste any more time worrying about them!  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I picked up some Red Duke of York in January and planted them 2 weeks ago.
They only had chits about 1/2in long after all that time and they were a dark colour.
If they are the only ones you have put in, then dig up one but because I've got other types  in I'll leave them alone.
Potatoes don't need to be chitted before planting.

Chits on my red DOY were very dark purple - almost black - but healthy. Are you sure the 'withered' bits weren't little leaves just starting to unfold? They do look a bit scrunched up.

Specsavers here I come.  I dug up a few and they'd grown lots of new roots.  On closer inspection - rather than peering down at them from 5' 4" - the sprouted bits were, as mentioned here, a very dark purple and healthy looking.  Hasilty replanted.

Thanks everyone.
