Hi.  I've just joined the forum and also have just planted  a 6 metre row of 3 varieties of raspberries, these will be tied into wires strung between 1.8m posts.  the ground in between the canes is weed free at the moment, but I doubt it will remain so for very long.   So I thought of planting strawberries between the raspberries as ground cover.  Does this sound like a good idea or not?   Any advise would be appreciated.  Thank you.
We are here on earth to do good to others, what the others are here for I don't know.

Welcome to the forums.

I don't think it's a good idea as the raspberries will quickly spread, and over-run the strawberries.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

What I do is mulch between the canes with well-rotted strawy manure or compost and then hoe regularly.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I prefer a deep mulch between the rasps to hold moisture.
I did a have a couple of stray strawberry plants at the end of the raspberry row last year but they did not do well.

Although strawberries are quite shallow-rooted so are raspberries; one or other (or both) are bound to suffer I would have thought.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Thank you for your thoughts everybody.  It looks like it will have to be a mulch.  I just thought it would be space effective and save on some weeding.

Not really space saving as you'd be tromping the strawberry plants to harvest the raspberries, and the raspberries would scratch your face off as you harvested the strawberries. In the end, it would just be a tangled mess that wouldn't get harvested at all.

I was thinking of mulching around my raspberries with grass cuttings, but I'm new and this is the only source of mulch available to me.

Grass cuttings are what i use, i put a good sprinkle of fertiliser down first .

My plot is just 8 yards by 15 yards so space is at a premium.

I have 36 new raspberry canes in two rows across the plot so I will be planting crops arond the base of the canes, i.e. lettuce, spring onions, beetroot and swiss chard. The rows are 4 feet apart and between them I`ll be growing french beans and cabbages. Need to make use of every square inch!
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

be careful.... raspberry roots are only about 4ins down, and they have to be allowed to spread out, or you won't get any new canes growing :(

Grass cuttings as a mulch will be fine as long as you don't layer them on too thickly or they go slimy; also make sure the grass you mow hasn't got seed heads or they will germinate nicely amongst your raspberries and you have to hand weed as the raspberries are so shallow-rooted..
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I have alpine strawberries growing around my raspberries but their leaves are much smaller and finer so don't shade out the raspberry bed surface. I also mulch around the raspberries with mowings and the strawberries climb and sit on top which keeps the fruit clean. A prefect symbiotic relationship and double use of one piece of ground.

I don't trample the strawberries because the bed is only four feet wide so I can reach from the path both sides.

But then I would be awkward!
