I make shallow holes in loose soil, pop about half a dozen seeds in each. At least one of those is highly likely to germinate so after a while I thin out so there is one per hole. And that's that. I don't bother netting these to be honest.

And some of the thinnings - when they look like really miniature parsnips (so cute!)- I delicately plant elsewhere and almost all of those still grow to full parsnips. Worked perfectly each year so far any how. Here's hoping this year is the same....

I grow them alongside my carrots and net the lot. Simples.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I just sowed them and I got a lovely crop.  Probably lucky.

They are really not that hard to grow. It is just that because the germination rate is lower than most seeds, and people see that while other things have germinated and are growing well, so far the parsnips have done very little - if anything - they get a little anxious and assume failure. And when they do germinate, there are sometimes huge gaps where some havent and then the whole worry about sowing more in the gaps, will there be time, etc etc etc....

What varieties did you grow, out of interest?
