Oranges and lemons say the bells....
Sorry I wandered off topic  :(  To get back on track and to give an authoratative reply how about the following.

When you send for a composter from you local Council Scheme you get a magnet for your fridge with pictures on.The headings above the pictures on this magnet state PUT IN on one side and KEEP OUT on the other. The first items shown on the PUT IN side are apple AND ORANGE peelings. This advice is given by Recyclenow themselves. That plus Muntys blessing should be enough for any self appointed watchdogs I would have thought. 8)

Now to get back to setting fire to things how about...........................
Some poor village is missing its Idiot
plus officially the longest ever occupier of the naughty step.

Thanks very much for all your replies, sorry if I lit a bonfire of controversy about citrus fruit. I will now put the fors and againsts to the allotment gaffer.

i cant imagine how the small quantity of citrus fruit skins from the average house would have any significant impact on your compost, esp if using big pallet sized compost bins, if they have not rotted throw them back in for another yr. better on my heap than in the landfill,

Agreed!

Don't be sorry! I'm sure I'd be correct in saying that participants on the board like exchanging views, it is after all how we learn stuff

(I still think that citrus isn't the best composting material, but this is a long way from "don't compost citrus". Put another way, if I filled my compost bin half full of lemon peel, I'd feel lucky to have compost resulting from it within the decade   )
