I,ve got a one or two crowns...(well,6 actually )as I'm VERY partial so to speak....had a look last weekend and the couple I covered with a thick layer of straw are well on the way, whereas the uncovered crowns are barely showing.....

Maybe let nature take it's course. We are further north and the rhubarb covered itself with no help from us!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I noticed mine was doing something similar to yours DD I was surprised at how early it is popping up but it might just be that I never notice it normally until it is at the picking stage.

I have a few patches on my new lotty. I have no idea what type it is but I am hoping it will make me some lovely crumble and chutney.

Depending how old your rhubarb is prior to you taking over the plot you should assuming it was only planted the year previous, get a better crop this year. If not it could be that it had a few years behind it and it may be more prudent to re plant. Although its been said that if you dig the old crowns up and leave them to let the frost get at them that this treatment sends them back to infancy, but I have no experience of this practise.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.
