Im really struggling to find out if I can keep some chickens.  I have order a chicken coop already, which I know I shouldn't have done.  I assumed I would be ok as other residents nearby are keeping them.  I have been on my councils website and enviromental heal site.  Im waiting and a call back from someone in the council as no one knows if there are any restrictions.
Im not wanting to keeps loads, 2/3 max.
Can anyone help me find out where I can find out definately. :(
I have 1 Lovely Husband, 2 lovely children, Poppy the Jack Russell, Alvin the Hamster, Jemima & Florence, Ben & Jerry the Budgies and our gorgeous Chick Sylvia and Jess aka Terry :D

Morning

I live in Rotherham and the maximum the Local Authority allows me to keep, on my back garden, without permission is 50 so I'm sure you'll be fine.  I wouldn't worry too much if others in the area are keeping hens.

I would check with the council for peace of mind, I emailed mine - may be quicker than waiting for someone to call back, you know what they are like!

The other thing that is recommended is to check the deeds of your property to make sure that there is no clause that may have been included in the past which restricts keeping poultry.

Hope it all works out well for you.

Most places will not let you keep cockerels though and the 50 restriction is because you have to then be registered with Defra.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Finally got an answer from the council.  If you own your house you are allowed to keep chickens/poultry as long as your make sure you do not cause a vermin problem or have cocks.  If however you rent your home this is not the case, you would have to seek permission.  Our council was great when we finally got hold of them.

It's on our deeds that we can't have chickens. :(

its not on my deeds, but I have heard that if you are not keeping daft amounts in a garden ie 50 then you may be able to get permission, I would take proper advice on that one. I would phone your council, and clarify on your deeds if this means chickens as a pet or chickens as a business.
